Oklahoma participated as a “Setting the Stage for Success” grantee, a project designed to learn from and replicate the North Carolina ABCD Project model for integrating standardized developmental screening into well-child care visits. Specifically, ABCD Screening Academy activities in Oklahoma included:
- Clarifying information on Developmental Surveillance and Screening on the state’s Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.
- Revising their Medicaid policies to allow reimbursement for developmental screening (procedure code 96110) on the same day as a routine office visit or well-care/EPSDT visit. Oklahoma pays $9.30 in addition to the reimbursement for the well child visit. If a provider uses more than one screening tool at a single visit, e.g. Ages and Stages Questionnaire and the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (MCHAT), they can submit for reimbursement for two instances of 96110 in addition to the CPT code for the well child visit.
- Developing a uniform referral/consent form to ease communication between primary care and Part C providers.
- Using intensive longitudinal in-office detailing at five demonstration sites and placing a Practice Enhancement Assistant (PEA) on site to provide ongoing technical assistance for integrating screening into existing offices processes.
